Encore's September Music Notes

Monday, September 4, 2017 by Bradley Allen | Uncategorized

Dear Encore Parents and Students,

Happy Labor Day!  NO Lessons or Classes today.  Welcome back to school and cooler Autumn weather!  Expect teachers to begin assigning Recital repertoire if they haven't already.  Our Autumn Recitals are scheduled for Saturday, November 18th at 10:00 A.M., 11:30 A.M., and possibly 1:00 P.M. in the Sanctuary of The Church of the Master located at 24 N. Grove St. on the Otterbein University Campus!  This is the same location we have been graced to use for the last several Recitals thanks to Miss Kitty.   We are encouraging all students (adults too, as we have many) to participate.  It is a golden opportunity to gain experience studying a piece of music more intensely over a longer period of time to refine musical skills and expression as well as providing valuable performance acumen.  Recitals are also a great time to share with the Encore family and for students to hear various levels of ability, styles, and instruments.  Speaking of sharing social time, a big thank you once again to all the bakers in our family for the delicious treats after the Spring recitals!  We are asking once again for help in that area and there will be a place to signup to bring confections on the Autumn Recitals Signup Page when it goes live at the end of October.  Our new violin and viola teacher, Rachael Keplin, accompanied by Dr. Helen Allen, will perform Schubert's Arpeggione from his Sonata in A Minor,  at 11:15 A.M., between the 10:00 and 11:30 recitals.  Come a little early for the 11:30 recital or stay longer after the 10:00 recital for this performance!

Welcome to our new teachers starting in September: Sean Byrne, violist & violinist and Mary Daley-Moore, vocalist & pianist!  They both add to Encore as they have great musical talent and exhibit kindness and a love of students.  We're thrilled to have them both!

Please take time to review Encore's policies, particularly those referring to the tuition payment schedule.  There has been some confusion about whether Encore requires payment by the dates specified and whether a student can pay only partially depending on the the number of lessons attended.  Encore expects tuition by the 25th of the preceding month, no later than the 1st.  After the 1st, please add the required late fee.  Encore does not accept partial payments for monthly tuition unless there is a special arrangement with Brad, the Director of Encore, such as prorating the payments when a student is beginning in the middle of the month.   Thank You!

Encore has been adding new rewards to the Practice Prizes Bins.  Congratulations to many of you who are consistently practicing 5+ Days/week and earning Gold Stars!  You help yourselves and help Encore to be successful in its mission of excellence!

Encore Music Studios' April Music Notes

Dear Encore Family,

We want to welcome Ben Crowder to the faculty at Encore!  Ben teaches Trombone and beginning Piano and Guitar.  We also want to say a fond farewell to an Encore veteran Voice teacher Carol Fry who is retiring this month to spend more time with her husband.  We wish you the Very Best for you and yours!

April is an exciting time at Encore, culminating in our Spring Recitals on Saturday, April 29th at 10:00 am and 11:30 am in the Church of the Master sanctuary.  This is the same location as the November 2016 Autumn Recitals.  Thanks again to our Director Emeritus, Kitty, for securing the arrangements.  We will be regaled with the Bach - Sonata No. 2 in A Minor - Fugue by our very own Sean Klopfenstein @ 11:15am.  There will be opportunity for the consumption of confections after each Recital as well.  In fact, this year we welcome any teacher, parent, or student who would like to contribute to our refreshment table by checking a box at the bottom of the Recital Information and Signup Page.  We certainly don't need everyone to contribute in this way, but if baking is a joy for you, we certainly would be blessed through your assistance.  Sean's students and anyone else who would be benefited by piano accompaniment not already provided for the Recitals are also encouraged to check a box on the Signup Page.  We are reserving Thur. April 20th and Wed. April 26th from 4:00-7:30pm at the Westerville Studio for this purpose.  Please indicate what times you are available and we will let you know your assigned time by Monday, April 17th.  For those families utilizing this opportunity, the recommended donation for accompaniment services is $25 made out to Helen Allen.

A Special Thanks to:

Diane LaHue, former owner of Encore Music Studios, for her continued support and flexibility with the shared space at the Dublin location!

Sean Klopfenstein for his dedication to and development of our Suzuki Violin Group Class.  I have received great feedback from our parents!

Kitty Laurich for continuing to take students as the word of mouth of her abilities with young violin students has traveled nationally!

Ian Harrah for being a steady and integral part of Encore's growth!

Helen Allen for her undying devotion to me and the success of Encore!

Encore Music Studios' February Music Notes

Everybody Practicing?

While we kicked off January Jam at the beginning of the month, if you're new to Encore, I'd like to explain a little about it.  At both the Dublin and Westerville locations, there are dry erase Announcement Boards that have information about our newly instituted music practice system.  The unofficial age range for the system is 3-16 years old, but adult learners are welcome to participate as well!  Many students have achieved the green and blue stars, and some red stars at this point!  Essentially, we want every student to have as his or her practice goal every week 5 or more days of personal practice.  We want them to be disciplined and consistent in their commitment to excelling at their chosen instrument/s.  It also teaches them to manage their time wisely.  In February, students will have the opportunity to begin earning gold stars.  Once they have earned a gold star for 4 consecutive weeks, they earn a prize(Artsy Success Pencils, Refillable Pens with Comfort Grips, Local Coupons or Certificates, etc . . .)!  The students will begin choosing 1 prize for every 4 consecutive gold stars they earn.  If they have consecutive gold stars until the Encore Music Studios' Spring Recital(which is now officially scheduled for Saturday, April 29th at either 10:00am or 11:30am, perhaps also 1:00pm if needed), then they will select a larger prize(Ear Buds, Hard-Bound Music Composition Book, Guitar Chords Book, Supplemental Music Book, etc . . .)  If the student is away on vacation for most of a week without access to their instrument, such as during Spring Break, this week will not break the student's consecutive star streak.

Additionally, during the week of Valentine's Day(Feb.13th-18th), instead of moving the Glass Gems from the Glass Star to the Glass Heart,  Encore will be celebrating by allowing each student to consume customized Encore Valentine's M&M's, the number being determined by the amount of days practiced the previous week.  PARENTS, PLEASE monitor your young children to make sure they do not take a large handful!

Encore's Spring Recital

It would excite us and fill our hearts to have Everyone commit to participate in the Recitals this Spring!!!  Adult learners, nervous students, and beginners : WE WANT YOU! Well, we want everyone else too!  There is no fee for the Recitals(unless you need an accompanist- it will be a modest fee)!  It is a loving, supportive environment.  There are free homemade gourmet treats! It is a great opportunity to socialize with other Encore families!  Plus, we will have at least 1 or more guest performers in between recitals!

We are enthused by the response of parents and students to January Jam and will work to keep the momentum going!  Oh,  in Westerville we added Green Tea to our mix of hot drinks and sealed a small crack at the bottom of the entry door to keep the lobby toastier!  Thank you Encore families and teachers once again for your effort and support!
