Ages 4 and Up
Piano is one of the most popular instruments. There are several reasons for this. Piano can be studied by students as young as 4. The piano is well-tempered, which essentially means it does not require a tuning adjustment while being played. This makes it easier to learn. Piano also allows the student to learn both bass and treble clef staff notes and is a great instrument on which to compose music. While a piano is not portable, there are transportable, digital keyboards on the market that can be used in place of a piano. We highly recommend that the student has access to either a full-size keyboard or a piano for practice.
What’s the #1 reason to study piano at the Academy?
We have multiple piano teachers with which we can pair each student, and we teach all levels of talent and every musical style.
What styles of piano do you teach?
Our teachers are qualified to teach Classical, Suzuki, Jazz, Pop, Blues, Folk, Indie, Rock, and more.
What will I learn from piano lessons at the Academy?
Beginner piano students can expect to work on chords, scales, simple songs and melodies, sight-reading, technique, and theory. Our instructors balance musicianship and fun by making sure that lessons present new technical challenges or theory concepts, and include something fun, such as your favorite riff or song. We use a variety of piano method books including Faber, Suzuki, Alfred, RCM, Bastien and others.
Do I need to purchase a piano to learn the instrument?
Ideally, each student will have access to a piano. However, it is perfectly fine to purchase a keyboard or rent one from us (stand, music holder, adapter, pedal included for $35/month) as an alternative to having a piano in the student’s practice space. As the student furthers his studies and grows as a musician, we highly recommend renting or purchasing an acoustic or digital piano. Feel free to ask us if you need suggestions for stores to visit.
